This is Something That Takes a Lot of Studying
When checking out jobs for hospital coding I didn’t realize just how much time and effort went into learning this type of work. It is quite complicated and there are even legal issues that need to be considered. One gal I spoke to said that she sometimes got fed up with having to read doctors’ handwriting in doing this type of work. I could definitely sympathize with how she felt because I did “handwriting analysis” for a long time a while back for attorneys. It was no fun always having to go and ask them about what this was, or what that was when trying to type up their billings or other notes of theirs.
But back then the legal transcription and coding wasn’t all that involved, nor were there legal issues to consider. This was just a job we learned as we went, “on the job” as it were. No big deal. So now to be a hospital coder one has to pay (up front usually) thousands of dollars to learn the “handwriting analysis” type of work. Times have changed.
